SURVEYORS DRAWINGS - These maps were produced by the Military Engineers and used to produce the 1st edition County Series. We currently have coverage for the whole of the UK.

TITHES MAPS (England & Wales) - Tithes were originally payments in kind to the local parish church and its clergy for its support. The kind was crops, milk, wool, etc and were an agreed proportion of yearly profits of the cultivation or farming of the land.

Tithe Maps were not produced for every parish throughout the country. Some parishes and townships were not subject to the Tithe Commutation Act. (its tithes may have been extinguished earlier, possibly under one of the enclosure acts)

Tithe Maps vary in accuracy, scale, and size. The Commissioners tried to secure a uniform and high standard of mapping. There were many experienced and skilled land surveyors available but the cost of producing these maps were met by the landowners themselves. The richer the landowner the better the quality and accuracy of the map.

While every landowner had to produce a map, the Commissioners would only add their seal. About 1,900 tithe maps have this seal, about 16% of all the maps. The ones with the seal were called First Class Maps and the ones without the seal were called Second Class Maps.

TITHES MAPS (Scotland) - Tithes in Scotland were “Teinds” but these were only payable by the owners of heritable property within the parish. The system was ended by an Act of Parliament in 1925.

Most records are held in private and estate records.

ESTATE MAPS - produced by The Crown Estate commissioners and predecessors and relate to responsibilities for the management of foreshore, agricultural, forest and urban estates. These maps may relate to particular geographical areas or to the sale and lease of Crown lands. The maps date from 1441 onwards.

ENCLOSURE MAPS - are legal documents recording the ownership and distribution of the lands enclosed.  They may also include the landed endowments of schools, charities and churches. Nineteenth century enclosures were carried out under the terms of public general enclosure acts, and the General Enclosure Act of 1845 appointed permanent commissioners who could issue Enclosure Awards without redress to Parliament.
