Aerial Photographs

We are pleased to announce a co-operative agreement between Compass Consulting and Skyscan, an aerial photographic company based near Cheltenham, who can undertake searches for site and date specific aerial images.

Aerial Photographs Searching Service
They have also established probably the most comprehensive database in the country of historic aerial photographic collections. Details of approaching five hundred archives and libraries are held, responsible for tens of millions of images. The information enables them to undertake an authoritative search for any UK location photographed during the last sixty years or more, provide a written report on the findings, and supply reprints from the images if required. Success cannot be guaranteed, if for example an image simply doesn't exist, but all possibilities will have been checked both promptly and cost effectively. Skyscan quote for each proposed search on receipt of a completed enquiry form. Charges range between thirty five and five hundred pounds with searches taking between ten and twenty working days.

Skyscan are a specialist firm founded in 1984 to produce and supply high quality aerial images of the UK. Their now extensive photolibrary holds air to ground images taken by themselves and many other aerial photographers which are used for both promotional and record purposes. In addition to their own accumulated experience and knowledge they have a network of contacts with other aerial photographers and libraries in the UK and abroad, and can offer impartial advice and guidance if wanted.

"Ground Risk Management Limited have worked with Compass for many years. The quality and speed of delivery of historic mapping is an important part of the assessment of a site. By combining the skills of our geotechnical, environmental and structural staff, we can ensure that aspects of the ground are understood with respect to their technical, financial and environmental implications.

GRM will fight the ever-increasing over-conservatism that creeps into the development process, and deliver cost effective solutions to ground challenges.

Archaeological Site Information

We have linked up with AF Howland Associates who are Archaeological Consultants in Sudbury, Suffolk. They offer independent archaeological advice to their clients engaged in the development of rural and "brown-field" sites.

Howland’s archaeological department is complemented by the firm’s specialist knowledge of geological and environmental issues. Their in-house archaeologists work closely with their engineers in providing a service dedicated to the construction industry.

Many developments are bound by planning conditions, which are subject to the assessment of the impact of the scheme upon the archaeological resource. Planning consent may also require an agreed programme of archaeological fieldwork. In such circumstances, it may prove necessary to implement a project design, by which archaeological deposits can be recorded in advance of construction.

Specifications issued by County Development Control Officers frequently require the on-site presence of an archaeologist to supervise the machining of deep excavations within areas that are suspected of supporting archaeological horizons. A F Howland are able to respond promptly and cost-effectively to the requirements of county planning officers, and have particular experience of archaeological monitoring; working alongside contractors within the construction industry, as well as for public utilities and mineral extraction companies.

For further information, or for confidential advice on any matter relating to archaeological planning conditions, the archaeology department can be contacted at their Norwich and Sudbury offices.
