| | If you try to obtain Historical Maps yourself, you have a
number of options:
- A Local Library in the town where your site is situated.
They may not hold all the maps published for your site, the map curator may
be off that day, they have the maps but don't offer a copying facility. All
this can add up to a waste of your time as a consultant, which is usually
expensive.
- You may want to use a "freelance-one man band"
researcher to obtain your maps for you. They usually charge a fixed price
per A4 copy which means that their charge for the completed map set can vary
depending on the number of maps they find for each site. If this "researcher" falls ill
or goes on holiday you will have to locate a substitute supplier at short
notice.
- You could send your request to a well known
Academic Institution. Since they only have access to their own
collection you are hoping that it is a complete collection. If the 2nd and
3rd edition County Series are in volumes then you will not be able to obtain
copies. Also the turnaround of your order could be anything from 5 to 22
working days.
- You could obtain your maps from a large "environmental" company
who supply data and maps at the press of a button. This is fast but the
quality of the maps can be a little poor due to the scanning process. They
only have the maps that they have scanned and put on their system, these
maps were scanned from a single map source that again may not have had a complete
collection. The maps are usually produced with radius rings marked around
the site, and with copyright restrictions making them a
"Single-use" item.
- You could use a variety of
web-based suppliers where the maps can be down-loaded from the web.
As we have seen with this kind of service, there is confusion to the actual
date of the maps. Usually each map is labeled with a date range, 1964 - 1976
or 1903-1916 as example. No indication of survey date, revision date or
publish date is given.
Or you could use Compass.
No one source has a FULL collection of maps. That's why we use up to three
sources to obtain a Full Map Set for a site. We choose the best places to go for
maps of your site, and it doesn't always follow that we will go to a source in
Cheshire just because your site is in Chesshire.
Because we copy the maps on the clients behalf, the maps
belong to the client and the client is free to make as many copies as they like
of the maps, making royalty payments to the OS for each copy. The maps can, in
that way, be filled and re-used for a neighboring site in the future, again
making royalty payments to the OS for each copy.
We are the ONLY Map Supplier in the UK to obtain maps in this way. Using this system
allows us to supply the most comprehensive Map Set in the UK today, at a range
of turnaround times to suit the client and at a realistic and fair price.
Since we only charge for our time in gathering the maps, the
client can decide how urgently they require the maps and are charged
accordingly.
All
our services are backed by unbeatable customer service.
